The state that Colonel Sanders put on the world map has plenty of other claims to fame. The former slave state which officially stayed neutral during the Civil War, yet supported the Union, is home to bluegrass folk music, has the highest concentration of deer and turkeys in the US, has a sizeable manufacturing industry and the nation’s largest coal deposit and is the nation’s bourbon capital. The heroic pioneer, Daniel Boone was a Kentucky son as were both Abraham Lincoln and his Confederate adversary Jefferson Davis. Today the southern state of Kentucky has plenty of character and natural beauty to entertain the many visitors who come to enjoy the company of its friendly folk and unique identity with its year round pleasant climate. And of course the eyes of the nation turn on Kentucky every May with the nation’s favourite horse race, the Kentucky Derby.
