The landlocked rural state of South Dakota is home to one of nations most iconic images; Mt Rushmore. The state is cut in half by the Missouri River, the fertile eastern part a major agricultural producer while the undulating western part is cattle country. In winter the state lies under several feet of snow, while summer sees long warm days ripening the states rich harvests. The state has many Indian sites and the echo of the frontier past can still be heard. During the Cold War the state housed many nuclear facilities which now attract tourists. South Dakota is very affordable and ideal for campervans, holidaying with pets and outdoor recreation enthusiasts.
Mt Rushmore took 14 years to carve and was completed in 1941. This truly spectacular monument to the nation’s first 150 years is a must-see.
The Minuteman Missile National Historic Site is the nation’s tribute to the Cold War. The apocalyptic might of the nuclear silos and missiles will stun you.
Custer State Park is one of the few places where herds of bison roam free. The unique scenery attracts a myriad of wildlife as well as tourists.
In summer try mountain biking and winter cross country skiing. It’s tremendous fun and help you shed some pounds at the same time.
The Crazy Horse Memorial is a tribute to the great Indian hero, Chief Crazy Horse. The Indian Museum of North America is nearby.
